Starring Viggo Mortenson and Vicky Krieps, two lonely immigrants find each other in the old west and settle down, but when her man Olsen goes off to fight in the Civil War, Vivienne must fend for herself in a place controlled by a corrupt mayor and his unscrupulous business partner. When Olsen returns from the war, they must confront and make peace with the person each has become. "Captivating framing drives this lyrical, romantic western," writes the Chicago Reader, while Globe and Mail adds, "In its unconventional narrative and it's tender perspective on a brutal era, Mortensen’s film is tightly drawn, deeply personal and refreshingly unconventional."
